Agnes Lemaru has been working as a security guard since completing her O-Level education in 2000 in the north-western Ugandan town of Arua. At the time, she wanted to join the armed forces, and one day she and her twin brother responded to a police recruitment call there. The twins were rejected for being short, she said with a chuckle recently. “They were measuring the height, so we failed,” she told TWR. “Me and my brother, the height just rejected us.” Her brother later managed to enlist in the army, leaving Lemaru pondering what she wanted to do with her life. She always felt she could do well in a job that required vigilance.
In 2002 she got married, an experience she described as “hot.” The marriage produced three children but failed after seven years when Lemaru decided to leave the home. She came to Kampala seeking work in private security service as an askari of the kind who guard banks, supermarkets, and even private estates. She worked with the Askar company for three years, then she was with the Senaca company for four years, and then she was briefly with SGA. She was deployed at sites ranging from U.N.-rented buildings to sports betting halls.
Lemaru was regularly deployed at a supermarket when her current employer discovered her. The businesswoman and Lemaru used to make small talk when the woman came to do her shopping. After Lemaru resigned from her company over a wage dispute, the woman began asking others about Lemaru. Informed of why Lemaru had stopped working, she looked for Lemaru and offered her a job.
Lemaru said accepted the job that pays better and gives her shelter – and to this day remains in the job. She looks after a big rental property in the Namugongo area of the central Ugandan district of Wakiso. Short and stocky, sometimes she can be found sweeping the dusty entrance to the estate, her rosary dangling. Mostly she keeps in her room behind the gate. Her smile is warm and conspiratorial, especially when she is asked questions for which she has ready answers. She regularly attends Sunday Mass at the Catholic basilica in Namugongo.
Lemaru writes as if she were making reports to her superiors in a security company. She pointed out that working for a private estate is like working for a company in one way: she has to watch out and she’s required to make detailed notes of what transpires in the course of a day. But one key difference, she said, is that she is required to restrain herself, so that she keeps calm during those moments when she would like to manhandle those who disrespect, or intrude on, her. “For me I was short-tempered, but now I am O.K.,” she said.
If her notes do not charm, at least they denote the vigilance in her manner that has endeared her to those who know her well, including many young women from Arua who have found employment in Kampala with her help. Lemaru is nothing if not kind. This diary highlights her personal travails, including false accusations, the ever-present threat of danger from thieves, and the menace one faces everywhere in Kampala’s crowded streets. As always, this diary is presented in the woman’s voice; nothing is edited, although there are minor interventions when this is deemed necessary to achieve a measure of clarity. – TWR
